Privacy Policy
How we collect, use, share, and protect information about you when you use Unicorn Money. For the plain-English version with examples and our reasoning, see our Security & Privacy page.
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how Unicorn Money LLC, a Texas limited liability company ("Unicorn Money", "we", "us", or "our"), collects, uses, shares, and protects information about you when you use the Unicorn Money website at unicornmoney.app, the Unicorn Money web application at my.unicornmoney.app, the Unicorn Money mobile application for iOS, and any related services we offer (collectively, the "Service").
By creating an account, accessing, or using the Service, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, please do not use the Service.
If you have questions about this Policy, contact us at privacy@unicornmoney.app.
2. Geographic Scope
The Service is offered by Unicorn Money LLC and is intended for use by individuals located in the United States. We do not target or actively market the Service to users outside the United States, and our infrastructure (including data storage) is located in the United States.
If you are accessing the Service from outside the United States, please be aware that your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. We do not currently offer the Service in compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, or similar non-U.S. data protection frameworks. By using the Service, you consent to the transfer and processing of your information in the United States.
The Service is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, contact us at privacy@unicornmoney.app.
3. Information We Collect
3.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Account information: email address and password (passwords are stored hashed by our authentication provider, Supabase; we do not have access to your plaintext password).
- Profile information: first name, last name, optional avatar emoji or uploaded profile photo.
- Mobile phone number, if you choose to enable SMS-based transaction logging.
- Financial information you input: income amounts, bills, spending categories and transactions, savings goals, debt payoff goals, giving recipients and amounts, and account labels and balances. This information is primarily entered manually by you. If you subscribe to our optional Una+ plan and choose to link a financial account, we also retrieve limited account and transaction information through Plaid, at your request, as described in Section 3.4. We never move money and never connect to an account without your action.
- Household information: information identifying members of your "household" within the Service and invite codes you generate or accept.
- Communications with our AI companion ("Una"): messages you send to Una and any context you choose to share (such as your household's financial "philosophy" or goals).
- Support communications: information you provide when you contact us by email or other means.
- Waitlist information: if you sign up on our landing page at unicornmoney.app, we collect your email address.
3.2 Information Collected Automatically
When you use the Service, we and our service providers automatically collect limited technical information, which may include:
- Device and browser information (such as browser type, operating system, and screen size).
- IP address (used by our hosting and authentication providers for security and fraud prevention; not used by us for advertising).
- Log data, including timestamps of requests, error logs, and usage events necessary to operate the Service.
- Aggregated, non-identifying page-view information.
3.3 Information About Other Household Members
If you invite another person to join your household within the Service, you may share an invite code or link with them. We collect their information directly from them when they create their own account; we do not ask you to provide their personal information beyond what is necessary to send the invite.
3.4 Information From Linked Financial Accounts (Una+)
If you subscribe to Una+ and choose to link a bank or card account, we use Plaid Inc. ("Plaid") to connect to that institution. When you tap to check a balance or catch up on transactions, we receive: the institution name, a partial account number ("mask"), current account balance(s), and recent transaction details (date, amount, and description) for the account you linked. We access this information only when you initiate it — there is no automatic, scheduled, or background syncing.
We store a secure access credential for the linked institution on our servers so you can retrieve again later. This credential is never accessible to your browser or app, and you can disconnect at any time, which deletes it. We do not store retrieved bank balances on our servers, and retrieved transactions do not become part of your records unless you explicitly select them to log. If you mark a suggested transaction as "already logged," we retain only an identifier for it so we do not suggest it again. Plaid handles your bank login credentials directly; we never see or store them. See Section 6.1 for more on Plaid.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To provide, maintain, and improve the Service, including authenticating you, syncing your data across devices, and enabling household sharing.
- To generate AI-powered responses and summaries through Una, our AI companion (see Section 6 for details on processing by Anthropic).
- To process and respond to SMS transactions you log via text message.
- For Una+ subscribers who link an account, to retrieve the account balances and recent transactions you request, so you can reconcile balances and catch up on logging.
- To send you transactional communications (such as password reset emails, account confirmations, and important Service notices).
- To respond to your requests for support.
- To monitor and improve performance, debug, and prevent fraud or abuse.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
We do not use your information to train AI models, sell your information, or serve advertising.
5. Cookies and Similar Technologies
We use only essential, operational technologies necessary to provide the Service. Specifically:
- Authentication tokens. We use session tokens (JWTs) issued by our authentication provider, Supabase, to keep you signed in.
- Local browser storage. We store limited information in your browser's local storage, such as your household identifier and pending invite codes, so the Service functions correctly between sessions. For Una+ users who link an account, we also keep a short-lived, device-local cache of recently retrieved bank balances so the balance comparison stays visible between page loads; this cache clears in the ordinary course and is not retained by us as stored data.
- Privacy-friendly analytics (if enabled). We may use Vercel Web Analytics, which collects aggregated, non-identifying page-view information. Vercel Web Analytics does not use cookies, does not store IP addresses, and does not track users across websites.
We do not use third-party advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, cross-site tracking technologies, or analytics services such as Google Analytics or Meta Pixel. We do not sell or share your information with advertisers.
If we add additional analytics, advertising, or tracking technologies in the future, we will update this Privacy Policy and, where required by applicable law, request your consent.
6. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the service providers necessary to operate the Service, with other members of your household as you direct, and where required by law.
6.1 Service Providers
We share information with the following categories of service providers, each of which is contractually bound to protect your information and use it only to provide services to us:
- Hosting and infrastructure: Vercel Inc. (web hosting and serverless functions) and Supabase Inc. (database, authentication, and file storage). These providers process information you submit to the Service in the course of delivering it.
- AI processing: Anthropic, PBC, which powers Una and other AI-assisted features. See Section 6.2 below for details.
- SMS delivery: Twilio Inc., which sends and receives SMS messages on our behalf when you use SMS-based transaction logging. Twilio receives your phone number and the contents of SMS messages exchanged with the Service.
- Transactional email: Resend for sending account-related emails such as confirmation and password reset messages.
- Payment processing (when applicable): Stripe, Inc. to process payments. Stripe will collect billing information directly from you under its own privacy policy.
- Financial account connectivity (Una+ only): Plaid Inc., which securely connects to the financial institution you choose to link and retrieves the account and transaction information described in Section 3.4. Plaid handles your bank login credentials directly; we never see or store them. Plaid's handling of your information is governed by Plaid's End User Privacy Policy, available at plaid.com/legal.
6.2 AI Processing by Anthropic
The Service includes an AI companion called "Una" and AI-assisted features for onboarding, transaction categorization, and monthly summaries. These features are powered by Anthropic, PBC ("Anthropic"), which processes information on our behalf as a service provider under its commercial terms.
When you use AI-powered features, the following categories of information are transmitted to Anthropic's API:
- Your first name, so Una can address you personally.
- Financial information you have entered into the Service, including income amounts, bill names and amounts, spending categories and transactions, savings goals, debt payoff goals, and giving recipients and amounts.
- Account information, including the names, labels, and current balances of the accounts you have set up.
- Conversational content, including messages you send to Una and Una's prior responses, in order to maintain context within a conversation.
- Household context, including narrative summaries of your household's financial situation and history that Una uses as memory.
- SMS message content, when you log a transaction by text message, in order to categorize and respond to it.
Anthropic processes this information solely to generate responses for you. Under Anthropic's current commercial terms, Anthropic does not use API inputs or outputs to train its models. For more information, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy at anthropic.com/legal/privacy and its Commercial Terms at anthropic.com/legal/commercial-terms.
6.3 Other Household Members
Information about your household's budget, transactions, goals, feed activity, and shared Una conversations (if you choose to share them) is visible to all members of your household. Private one-on-one conversations with Una are not shared with other household members unless you explicitly share them to the household feed.
6.4 Legal and Safety
We may disclose information when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to (a) comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request; (b) enforce our Terms of Service or this Privacy Policy; (c) detect, prevent, or address fraud, security, or technical issues; or (d) protect the rights, property, or safety of Unicorn Money, our users, or others.
6.5 Business Transfers
If Unicorn Money is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you (for example, by email and/or a prominent notice on the Service) of any change in ownership or use of your personal information.
7. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, except to the extent we are required to retain it for legal, accounting, fraud prevention, or dispute resolution purposes. Backups may persist for a limited additional period and are overwritten in the ordinary course.
Chat conversations with Una, household summaries, and budget history are retained for the lifetime of your household account so that the AI features can provide continuity and context. You can delete individual chat messages, household summaries, or your entire account at any time through the Service or by contacting us.
If you link a financial account through Una+, we retain the secure access credential for that institution until you disconnect the account, your Una+ plan lapses or is canceled, or you delete your account, at which point we instruct Plaid to remove the connection. We do not retain retrieved bank balances. Identifiers for transactions you have dismissed during catch-up are retained while your account is active so we do not re-suggest them.
8. Security
We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information, including:
- Encryption of data in transit using TLS.
- Encryption of data at rest by our database provider (Supabase).
- Password hashing handled by Supabase Auth (we do not store plaintext passwords).
- Row-level security policies that restrict access so members of one household cannot access another household's data.
- For Una+ bank linking, the access credential for a linked institution is stored server-side only and is never exposed to your browser or app.
- Access controls on our internal systems and limiting access to personal information to personnel who need it.
No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security. If we learn of a security breach affecting your information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information under applicable U.S. state privacy laws (such as the California Consumer Privacy Act / California Privacy Rights Act, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, the Colorado Privacy Act, the Connecticut Data Privacy Act, the Utah Consumer Privacy Act, and others). These rights may include:
- The right to know what personal information we collect about you and how we use and share it.
- The right to access a copy of your personal information.
- The right to correct inaccurate personal information.
- The right to delete your personal information, subject to certain exceptions.
- The right to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information. We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- The right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@unicornmoney.app. We will verify your request before responding, typically by confirming your control of the email address associated with your account. You may also designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, subject to verification.
You can also update your profile information, delete chat messages, leave or delete your household, and delete your account directly within the Service.
10. Financial Information Notice
Although Unicorn Money helps you manage budgeting and personal finances, we are not a bank, broker, lender, financial institution, financial advisor, or money transmitter. By default, financial information in the Service is information you enter manually. Our optional Una+ plan lets you link a financial account, on a read-only basis, through Plaid to check balances and catch up on logging; even then, we never move money, and nothing is added to your records without your explicit selection. We treat any financial information, however it reaches the Service, with the same care as other personal information described in this Policy.
The Service is provided for informational and organizational purposes only and does not constitute financial, investment, tax, or legal advice.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email and/or by posting a prominent notice within the Service prior to the change becoming effective. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this Policy indicates when it was most recently revised.
